The advertisement we ran in 2019
In September 2019 this project paid for a full-page advertisement in the New York Times. It is reproduced here as a record — and then held to the same sourcing standard as everything else on this site, which it does not pass.

And where it would fail this site’s own gate
This is the reason the page exists. A site whose entire argument is check everything has to be willing to check itself, in public, including work its own author is proud of.
- “1 MILLION+ INJURED” and “A MILLION SOLDIERS” — both would be struck today. Not because they are implausible, but because no source this project can produce supports either. Standard 1.
- “RSS assassinated Mahatma Ghandi” — stated flat. The assassin, Nathuram Godse, had documented associations with the RSS; the organisation was banned after the killing and the ban was later lifted, and its institutional responsibility is contested. The site’s rule is that a contested claim is labelled contested. (The advertisement also misspells Gandhi.)
- “THE SEIZING OF KASHMIR IS BLATANT RACISM” as a headline — a characterisation, not a finding. The site’s register puts the document first and lets the reader draw the conclusion.
- “SEIGE” — the headline misspells siege, twice, at the largest size on the page. Noted because a page that corrects other people should not quietly correct itself.
What the advertisement got right, and what this site still says: that the communications blackout was total, that the political leadership was imprisoned without charge, that relief and human rights organisations were locked out, and that it began on 5 August 2019. Why it is reconstructed rather than scanned
The layout, the copy and the headline are this project’s own work. The seven photographs inside the composition are not. At least two are wire agency frames — one carries the embedded credit AFP PHOTO / TAUSEEF MUSTAFA and the rights line AFP or licensors; another carries an Associated Press-format caption. One has no metadata at all, having arrived as a forwarded picture message.
A one-time print insertion in 2019 does not license republication on the open web in 2026, and this site is not going to reuse other people’s photographs while asking readers to trust its sourcing. It also promises, on File 02, to use no photographs of victims — and three of those seven are photographs of injured or distressed people, one of them an identifiable child.
So the advertisement below is rebuilt in type, with a labelled plate wherever a photograph was. Each plate says what stood there and who owns it. The redaction is the point.

THE SEIZING OF KASHMIR IS
BLATANT RACISM
This is happening in the world’s largest democracy, as Narenda Modi’s India has revoked the special status of Kashmir. Self-governance had been the rule in this Muslim-majority State for nearly 70 years, guaranteed by article 370 of India’s constitution. In one fell swoop Modi discarded the law and jailed hundreds of officials in what has been called “the darkest day in Indian Democracy.”
Modi refuses even to allow Indian opposition members of Parliament to visit Kashmir to see the situation for themselves.
Modi’s iron fist should come as no surprise to anyone who knows his long history with the RSS movement, which openly embraces Nazi ideology, endorsing the tactics of both Hitler and Mussolini. RSS assassinated Mahatma Ghandi as too accommodating to Muslims. One RSS founder, Golwalker, called the Nazi approach to Jews “race pride at its highest.”
An advocate of violence and ethnic cleansing, Modi earned the nickname “Butcher of Gujurat” for presiding over a pogrom that slaughtered 1000 Muslims in 2002. The George W. Bush State Department banned Modi from visiting the United States as a result.
Demonizing Muslims continues to be a hallmark of Modi’s policies. During his latest campaign, Muslims were called “infiltrators and termites.” Modi is also trying to take away the citizenship of nearly 2 million Muslims in Assam, while building camps for them.
The Modi Government has refused all offers of dialogue and mediation to resolve this issue. Appeasing Modi now will only cause his ideology of Hindu supremacy to spread even further — and Modi now has his finger on the nuclear button. It’s time for the U.S. and international community to stop him or risk another Munich.
What changed between 2019 and now
The advertisement was written six weeks after 5 August 2019, in the middle of a total communications blackout, when almost nothing could be verified from inside the territory. It argued from outrage because outrage was most of what was available.
Everything on this site is an attempt to do the opposite. The two OHCHR reports, the 432-case torture archive, the Chatham House survey, the 2,730 graves, the 476-page Supreme Court judgment, the recovered IPTK report — 12 primary documents, held locally, hashed, and cited to the paragraph. Where a number cannot be traced, it is not printed, and the refusals are published alongside the figures.
That is the difference between a poster and a record. Both have their place. Only one of them survives being checked.
